During his high school years in Alabama, Damon Johnson performed with several bands across the northeast Alabama region. Notably, he played with Pat Upton’s band, Headline, entertaining sizable crowds at Upton’s bar, P.J.’s Alley in Guntersville, for a duration of three years.

In 1987, Damon Johnson received an offer to join Split the Dark, an established band led by former members of the power-pop group Hotel. 

This opportunity led Johnson to relocate to Birmingham, Alabama. Split the Dark enjoyed significant popularity within the Southeast US college club circuit and had even won the MTV “Basement Tapes” competition in 1986, although they had yet to secure a record deal. 

Johnson’s introduction to bands with record deals came in 1988 when he became the guitarist for Witness, based in Atlanta, Georgia. Subsequently, he joined the Memphis, Tennessee band Delta Rebels in 1989, further broadening his musical experiences.

In 2012, Thin Lizzy was gearing up to record new material. However, the band members harboured reservations about releasing new songs under the Thin Lizzy name without the band’s original frontman, Phil Lynott. 

Johnson later expressed that if he weren’t part of the band, he wouldn’t have felt comfortable seeing new recordings released without Lynott. Consequently, the group opted to record under a different name and placed Thin Lizzy on hiatus.

In December 2012, Johnson co-founded the Thin Lizzy spin-off band, Black Star Riders, which released its debut album, All Hell Breaks Loose, in May 2013. Damon Johnson forged a songwriting partnership with frontman Ricky Warwick, and together they penned all the songs on the album. 

Johnson emphasised, “I joined Thin Lizzy because I wanted to play those great songs with Scott Gorham and Brian Downey. But let me be clear about this – I’m in Black Star Riders because of Ricky Warwick.”

On October 14, 2014, Damon Johnson performed his inaugural solo show in the UK at The Iron Road in Evesham. This came after years of staging solo acoustic shows in the US alongside his other musical commitments.

In November 2014, Damon Johnson unveiled his own hard rock trio, featuring bass guitarist Tony Nagy and former Whiskey Falls drummer Jarred Pope. The trio performed several shows in the US throughout April 2015.
